hi after getting some random errors I went through my machine and checked everything over a period of a month,ie..hardware, temps, settings, ect.. keeping an eye out for what may be causing my occasional error. here is what I think may be causing them.after many hours of observing the program running,i started to notice a pattern, that when my ip address is renewing(that may be the incorrect term)I lose net connectivity for a very short (seconds or less) period of time.it is the tasks running at this exact time, that bionic will lose connection and try to reconnect, that will produce a validate error.maybe just coincedince, but it only produces an error at this time. any idea how to resolve this, or a solution, I have cable connected to wireless router, but this machine is wired by Ethernet to the router.thanks

Are you saying that the network problem occurs when boinc is communicating with the server (reporting finished tasks or getting new ones)?
Or does the network outage happen while your machine is working on a workunit?

In the former case I can see it causing problems. The server will only get a partial result, however, I think boinc will resend the result automatically.

In the latter case I don't see how boinc working on a workunit locally could have any network traffic at all. Whenever I get a network outage the machine will just work along without a hiccup. Only if the network is still down when it comes time to send in results does boinc complain about lack of network.

Have you moved the boinc data directory to another machine (like a NAS)?

the outage happens while work

the outage happens while work units are in progress. these are the ones that produce an error.i am new to running bionic, but I cannot seem to run it or tasks without being connected. if I lose connection either by blocking activity with my firewall,or the random outage for whatever reason, tasks will stop and then try to reconnect.i cannot run without being connected.i tried exiting bionic using the exit manager dialog to keep tasks running even though exiting the manager, but still have the same prob in that it will not run without a net connection. I am running the newest version of bionic for my machine and only running is my only machine (home) except a couple of old ones I tried to see how the would work, but they were to slow with no useable gpu.. I also downloaded several days work to see if if I disconnected it would run but I still had to be connected..thanks

Boinc will run without a

Boinc will run without a permanent Internet connection. I would check your setting in Boinc. I have never had a problem with that so not sure which setting would cause it to only run when a connection is present.
With the invalids I tend to see more with FGRP4 if my ram speeds are to high (even if they are within recommended specs).
So if you are using anything over 1600mhz you could try lowing it.
No doubt there's 101 reasons why you get the occasional invalid, so just a possibility.

hi, when I first noticed the errors,i did some reading here, and I did try "powering down" ram and some other settings. i absolutely cannot run tasks or bionic without being connected. I have tried reading through all the settings, but to no avail. maybe I missed something.not sure why.i would like to disconnect to run work units overnight, without being connected especially with cooler weather coming, I will be able to up my cpu time and numbers of processers used

Did some googling and found

Did some googling and found that boinc occasionally contacts (ironically) google.com to test network connectivity (if this site is still correct):

0|1
To determine if a physical network connection exists, the client occasionally contacts a highly-available web site (google.com). If this flag is set, this behavior is suppressed. This flag also suppresses a periodic fetch of a project list from boinc.berkeley.edu.

So you cold put 1 in your cc_config.xml and see if that helps.

Barring that try to set more logging flags and check the log after a failure.

Edit: RTFM .. Should be 1 to suppress, not 0 :/

I use the web based setting

I use the web based setting on Einstein to control most of Boinc, Which I think is the default setting, (I.E unless you change something in Boinc preferences)
I would be tempted to reinstall Boinc, after finishing the current tasks, at lest you can rule one thing out, or clear the preferences.
I am very much if it don't work right re install it type of person, which also includes the same for Windows (when it misbehaves to much), but that might not be best idea for everyone.

You would have thought that this is a Boinc problem, bit i don't use Windows 8.1 with Boinc. Don't like Windows 8 or 10 for that matter, too little control and too much crap running in the background.

that is is what I was thinking (re-install) of bionic, and will do that next. I went from windows xp pro to 8.1. not one prob with 8.1 in 2 years.(like you if I did I would re-install) I don't know about 7, 8 or 10, but after getting rid of the metro in 8.1 ,its really good and I can control everything like the older versions.thanks
